First Day! Weathering a Cookie

At my student teaching seminar I learned about how to create a blog. I have seen so many amazing lesson ideas on blogs that I thought I should create my own and pass it on!

This week I taught my second graders about erosion and weathering. This is such a difficult concept because to them (and me!) they seem so similar. So I decided to spend a day on each and then spend a day bringing them together.

For weathering we did an experiment with a chocolate chip cookie. No really a chocolate chip cookie!! They loved it! Especially since after I gave them each one to eat! haha I had to!

First I gave them each a cookie and had them draw a picture of what their cookie looked like.

After I poured water on each of their cookies and had them watch what happens!

They watched how more and more crumbs were floating in the water. The cookie is breaking down just like rocks do. This is what weathering is!

I had them draw a picture of what happened and then answer some questions about weathering.

Great way for kids to learn weathering! Just give them a cookie:)
